Airsoft rifle-toting teens cause scare at Graham school

GRAHAM, Wash. – Deputies have detained a group of teenagers who caused a scare by allegedly walking into an elementary school armed with airsoft rifles.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department says it received multiple 911 calls about armed teens inside Graham Elementary School at 10026 204th Street E. in Graham.

The first call came from a teacher inside the school at 3:48 p.m., who reported five to seven teenage males had entered the school with what appeared to be rifles. At the time, school was out for the day, but a few students participating in after-school activities were still on campus.

Deputies took nine teens into custody. They will be booked for Possession of Dangerous Weapons on School Grounds.

Police recovered seven airsoft rifles. They went through each room of the school to make sure there was nobody hiding out.

Airsoft rifles shoot small plastic pellets.

Video from SkyKING shows several police vehicles blocking the entrances to the school parking lot. A deputy with a rifle could be seen leading a group of children who were still on campus away to safety.

No injuries have been reported,

Deputies say they don't have a motive.

Teens Seen With Airsoft Rifles At Graham School

GRAHAM, Wash. -- Six teens are in custody after they were on the grounds of Graham Elementary School with Airsoft rifles Friday afternoon.The principal called 911 around 4 p.m. to say there were 6 or 7 teenagers walking near the school with Airsoft rifles, the sheriff's office said.Pierce County sheriff's deputies responded to the 911 call and after about 20 minutes the six teens were in police custody. Seven Airsoft rifles were also recovered, said sheriff's spokeswoman Lynelle Anderson.The principal locked down the school during the incident, where five students and several teachers were still on campus, deputies said. They were all escorted out of the building by police around 4:35 p.m.Video from Chopper 7 showed armed officers running from building to building and searching the school grounds.Video also showed the seven teens handcuffed and sitting on grass while being questioned by police.

An Introduction to Airsoft "Snipering"

It was requested awhile ago that I discuss the finer points of sniping in the Airsoft realm. Well, I'll cover a few things to get you pointed in the right direction.

- First up: The Difference between a Sniper and a Sniper Rifle -

A sniper = a person (see below) who operates a sniper rifle, wears a ghillie suit on occasion, and infiltrates enemy lines undetected to relay intel back to command, oftentimes not firing a single shot.

Please do not refer to sniper rifles as just simply a, "sniper." You sound lazy, like a noob, and in some cases, a lazy noob.

- Spring vs. Gas rifles -

The two most common types of bolt-action Airsoft sniper rifles are either Spring- or Gas/HPA-powered. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. Let's talk briefly about them.

Spring rifles have the advantage when it comes to shot-to-shot power consistency on most days since ambient temperatures do not affect spring rifles like they do their gas counterparts. Therefore, spring rifles like the UTG Master Sniper Rifle (below left) or the Echo1 ASR (below right) are probably going to be the way to go in regions where colder temperatures prevail for most of the year.

However, the downside when it comes to high-powered spring rifles is the amount of strength required to cycle the bolt between shots. Because the spring tension is so heavy, it can be fairly difficult to quickly rack the bolt and it also makes it difficult to cycle without making a lot of movement, especially when lying prone, as many snipers like to do in-game. In this regard, gas rifles like the KJW M700P (Police Version) are going to have the advantage.

Gas rifles tend to have a bit less of a muzzle report as well, which helps to reduce the possibility of giving away your position on the field when you take a shot.

The good news about both spring rifles and gas is that there a plenty of high quality upgrade parts from companies like PDI, 2Roy and Nineball (owned by Laylax) to name a few of my faves.


Another, often overlooked or ignored, aspect of the using Airsoft sniper rifles is quality, heavyweight BBs. Nothing lighter than .27g BBs should be used. The heavier the better, however. Unfortunately, as you add weight to the BB, you begin to run out of options in the quality department. However, there are a few that I recommend. I will list them for you now in a quasi-particular order.

King Arms .30g Heavy BBs
King Arms .28g Platinum BBs
KSC Perfect .30g BBs

The one thing I stress about selecting the right ammo is that you really need to try more than one brand or type. I have found over the years and with the number of different rifles that I've owned that everybody's rifle is going to be different in terms of the BBs that work the best. One person may have excellent results with the SGMs .29s while another may have much better luck with the King Arms .30s. I recommend trying out at least three different types of BBs before making your final selection on what you're going to use.

Additionally, with the exception of the infamous Right Hook Fabrication Airsoft Sniper Rifles, there aren't really any rifles on the market that shoot as accurately as needed for a long-range Airsoft weapon right out of the box, so you'll likely need to do some fairly extensive tuning on your gun. Two important tools in testing your work are a chronograph to measure the velocity and consistency of your rifle, as well as a suitable target setup for groupings tests. For these items, it's been my pleasure to use the following items in my tests and reviews:

A bill died this session in the Legislature that would have made the penalties for using airsoft guns in robberies and terroristic threatening cases identical to cases involving real guns.

In 2009, airsoft guns were recovered in eight robberies and seven terroristic threatening cases in Honolulu. There were likely many more instances in which airsoft guns were never found after a crime, said Honolulu police Capt. Rich Robinson.

Yesterday Robinson displayed two shotguns, two Glock semi-automatic pistols and an MP5 assault rifle and challenged reporters and cameramen to identify which guns were real and which were fakes.

No one guessed that the Glock 26 was real and the rest were replica airsoft weapons.

"You can't even tell the difference between the Glock 18 and the Glock 26 — which one is real," Robinson said. "You get that gun pointed at you, you think you're about to be shot. You don't know it's a toy gun."

Airsoft guns fire nonlethal, plastic BBs and are required by federal law to be sold with orange tips on their barrels. But the tips are almost always immediately removed by buyers.

"I've never seen one with an orange tip," Robinson said, "and I've seen a lot of them."

Airsoft guns are most popularly used in shooting games, similar to paintball.

Like paintball players, airsoft players wear safety masks and helmets but fire BBs at one another in teams — or as individuals — in an infinite number of indoor and outdoor scenarios.

But unlike paintball, the allure of airsoft for a growing subculture dominated by teenage boys and young men comes from the realistic look of the guns.

"The realism, I would say, is 80 percent of the appeal," Woo said.

5,000 on O'ahu

Today, an estimated 5,000 players on O'ahu participate in at least one airsoft game each month, Woo said.

Airsoft's beginnings remain a mystery. Some say it started with BB gun manufacturer Daisy. Others believe the guns originated in Japan because of strict Japanese gun-control laws.

Regardless, airsoft's popularity in Japan quickly spread to Hawai'i, where the country's oldest airsoft organization — Air-Soft Hawai'i — was formed by founders such as Pat Ohta 23 years ago.

"Most of us will never own a real gun," Ohta said yesterday. "And these just look cool. They're the same ones that are in movies and TV shows and video games. Everybody has their favorite."

Following the passage of Honolulu's 2003 ordinance, Air-Soft Hawai'i began distributing hundreds of bright yellow brochures outlining the new law to dealers, such as Woo, who also gives his customers another sheet on safety tips and responsible behavior.

"We decided to take the initiative and go out there first with an awareness campaign," Ohta said. "That's helped a lot."

But airsoft guns continue to get some people into trouble here and on the Mainland, where criminals have increasingly used airsoft guns in robberies.

Police encounters

Locally, before then-Mayor Jeremy Harris signed the 2003 bill into law, Honolulu police had increasingly been pulling their weapons on young men carrying airsoft assault rifles, including:

• Sept. 28, 2003, when officers ordered a 16-year-old boy on Brown Way in Mānoa Valley to put down an airsoft AR-15 assault rifle that he had been loading with a magazine.

"If the male had not complied," HPD Capt. Marie McCauley said at the time, "I'm sure there would have been a shooting."

• Oct. 7, 2003, when officers confronted a 21-year-old man at the Market City Shopping Center who was trying to board a bus carrying an AR-15 airsoft rifle.

And on Sunday, law enforcement officials determined that Martin Boegel, 27, was carrying an airsoft pistol when he was shot and critically wounded by an off-duty FBI agent on Tantalus Drive.

Boegel's mother, Ute, believes he wanted to be killed by a law enforcement officer in what's commonly known as "suicide by cop."

Ute told The Advertiser that Martin had spoken several times about suicide since he stopped taking medicine for anxiety and depression in January but believed he wouldn't go to heaven if he killed himself.

Despite the passage of the 2003 Honolulu law, police continue to encounter people carrying airsoft guns.

As recently as May 1, a police officer was dispatched to a report of a man armed with a gun in 'Ewa Beach around 5 p.m.

As more officers arrived on the scene, one of them shot the suspect with a Taser gun.

The suspect's weapon turned out to be an airsoft gun.

Safety first

That's why airsoft player Scott Naleimaile, 57, of 'Aiea, has always prohibited his son, Chris, from taking their airsoft guns outside, except to play in an organized game.

"Basic gun rules — we stick to those," Naleimaile said yesterday. "I'm very adamant about that stuff. We follow all of the real firearm rules because they look so real, somebody can make a mistake."

When he saw his first airsoft gun eight years ago, Naleimaile was stunned by its resemblance to a real weapon.

"I was like, 'Wow,' " Naleimaile said. "I liked it."

Randall Omoto, 50, of Nu'uanu, also insists that his son treat their airsoft guns like the real ones they have at home.

"I also have two small children — a 3-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter — and all the guns are in a very secure part of the house and locked up," he said.

Omoto's also been impressed with the way that Honolulu's airsoft retailers emphasize gun safety.

"There's a pretty substantial briefing that they go through when it comes to safety," he said. "The safety part is paramount."

Peter Du, the owner of the Power Edge airsoft store in Kaimukī, has been emphasizing airsoft safety since he expanded his Wai'alae Avenue knife shop into a burgeoning airsoft business in 2001.

After the city ordinance went into effect in 2003, Du now refuses service to people who bring their guns in without a case.

"We don't want people carrying their guns while walking down the sidewalk," Du said. "That's a bad image for us. We tell them to treat them just like a real gun and use common sense."
