Air-gun antics result in arrest of Abington boys, both 13

Police remind parents of dangers of BB guns

A pair of juvenile air-gun snipers are in trouble with police after opening fire on two neighboring children.

The arrest of the youths, both 13, has local law-enforcement officials reminding children and parents of the dangers of BB guns, pellet guns and the like.

According to Abington Deputy Police Chief Christopher Cutter, the youths had been shooting from a first-floor apartment window at a stuffed rat they had set up outside the Abington Woods apartments on Route 18. The boys turned their sights on a bedroom window of an apartment about 30 yards away. Two other boys were inside playing video games.

Police found holes in the apartment’s vinyl siding. One BB or pellet penetrated the outer glass pane of a double-pane window. The boys inside the apartment were not hurt, but were frightened, Cutter said.

The incident was reported about 2:50 p.m. Saturday. Police found six air guns – two plastic-pellet guns and four that shot either BBs or other metal projectiles, Cutter said.

The youths have been summoned to court on charges of malicious destruction of property over $250 and discharging a BB gun or air rifle by a minor. Both are misdemeanors.

Cutter said children and parents should realize that air guns are dangerous.

“I think sometimes children believe BB or Airsoft guns are not dangerous,” he said, referring to the brand name of the plastic pellet guns. “Most of them pack quite a bit of power.”

Two arrested following carjacking in Taylorsville

TAYLORSVILLE — Two men who police say carjacked a student in the parking lot of the University of Phoenix were arrested in West Jordan late Tuesday.

Just after 10 p.m., a man was getting into his car at the University of Phoenix, 4393 S. Riverboat Road (900 West), when two men approached him and pointed a gun at him, said Taylorsville police detective Shannon Bennett.

"They ordered him to get on the ground," he said.

The men took the victim's vehicle, wallet and cell phone, and fled.

About an hour later, police were able to locate the vehicle at an apartment complex near 5500 West and 9000 South. The car was parked and the men were located a short distance away and arrested.

A weapon, which turned out to be an Airsoft gun, was also recovered.

Cameron Short, 19, and Michael Robinson, 20, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery.

In December, Short was convicted on DUI and driving on a revoked license in exchange for charges of joyriding and reckless driving being dismissed, according to Utah State Court records.

Airsoft has been in Malaysia for so many years ago and in one time airsoft are always considered as a toy. Airsoft guns may soon be going the way of real guns around the world, even in the US. Although pellets are used instead of bullets or paintballs, getting hit can still result in a nasty sting and a lingering wound.

Complaints against Airsoft guns have come from a number of quarters. For instance, the University of Hawaii at Manoa has banned Airsoft guns. Despite that ban?or, indeed, perhaps because of it?the campus was the site of a series of assaults on students by someone using an Airsoft pellet gun. Even so, much of the uproar has less to do with the damage done by the pellets and more with the construction of the guns themselves.

Airsoft guns can take the form of handguns or larger rifles and they can look remarkably realistic. It is this realism that has raised questions of safety, not the actual damage done by the pellets. Recently in Florida, a middle school student was shot by police after he brandished a weapon at them. The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun, though it was never established whether or not it was actually an Airsoft gun. From a distance, Airsoft guns definitely resemble the real thing and this has certainly led to a move to ban them.

In light of the calls to ban what are essentially toys, it?s quite ironic that the rise of Airsoft popularity began in Asian countries where access to real firearms is difficult. If a policeman sees a gun that looks real he simply has to assume that it is real, especially when pointed at him.

Since even accidental victims of pellet shots often admit that getting shot by one of them isn?t terribly painful, it seems rather ridiculous to ban these guns when the banning of real handguns are impossible. Rather, why not just make them less realistic? That doesn?t necessarily entail stripping the Airsoft guns of all realism, but would it hurt to redesign them subtly so that it is obvious they aren?t actual handguns?

The cost of realism in a game hardly seems worth the price of a life.
